Google Consent Mode V2: Advanced vs Basic — Which Should You Use and Why It Matters
Google Consent Mode V2 comes in two variants: Basic and Advanced. Many website owners enable Basic thinking they are compliant — but they are leaving 50-70% of their conversion data on the table. The difference between Basic and Advanced is the difference between partial data and complete data, between guessing and knowing, between underperforming ads and optimised campaigns.
Basic Mode
In Basic mode, when a user declines consent, Google tags simply do not fire. No data is collected, no conversions are tracked, no audience signals are sent. Your Google Analytics shows a gap. Your Google Ads has no conversion data for that user. Smart Bidding loses signal.
Advanced Mode
In Advanced mode, when a user declines consent, Google tags still send cookieless pings — anonymous signals with no personal data. Google then uses machine learning to model the likely behaviour of non-consenting users based on patterns from consenting users. Result: 50-70% of otherwise lost conversion data is recovered.
- Basic: User declines → zero data → gap in analytics and ads
- Advanced: User declines → anonymous ping → AI models conversion → 50-70% recovered
Revenue Impact
If 40% of your visitors decline consent (typical in Western EU), Basic mode means 40% of conversions are invisible. Smart Bidding underperforms because it lacks signal. ROAS reporting is inaccurate. With Advanced mode, Google recovers most of that 40%, keeping your bidding accurate and your reporting reliable.
Is Advanced Mode Legal?
Yes. Advanced mode sends cookieless, anonymous pings with no personal data. No cookies are set, no user is identified. Google has confirmed this is compatible with GDPR. The EDPB has not objected to anonymous aggregate modelling.
